Personal Context

My personal resolution for this decade (2020-2030) is to build self-discipline and reachout to other people for help.

I will do so specifically in the roles of —

  • an artsy entrepreneur 🚀

  • a screenwriter and filmmaker 🎥

  • a polyglot creator or a बहुभाषी रचयिता ❤️

  • and a helpful member of various communities 🙏🏼

= = = =

After taking an entrepreneurial plunge, it took me more than 14 months to arrive at the above resolution.

For my lack of speed, I went through a phase of really hating myself.

How could I not —

In the time it took me to write just a few bullet points, (so to speak),

Elon Musk lead SpaceX launched 26 rockets to orbit

SpaceX simultaneous landing of two Falcon 9 boosters

and

landed

them

back!!

GIF of SpaceX simultaneous landing of two Falcon 9 boosters

Communist Republic of China

launched

even

more,

a full 39 space rockets!!

(albeit they were single use)

Chinas Space Rocket

Okay . . .

Maybe it is not fair to compare my personal struggles, of trying to find myself, my artsy-entrepreneurial self, to the Space race between two great powers.

So . . .

I looked back at my failed efforts and did some self reflection

  • why did I start an endeavor?

  • why did it fail?

  • what did I learn from failures?

  • how did I change?

that sort of thing.

And in the process I started hating myself a little less :-) Because I found I was growing a little . . . differently.

And now I feel it is time to thank my roots,

venture out,

and start putting in the hard work again.

Shri Krishna says in the Gita —

  • You have the right to do something, to work, to act, at all times — कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते

  • But you have the right to create desired results, at no time — मा फलेषु कदाचन

  • On not getting result in accordance with your work — मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भुर्मा

  • Never attach yourself to that and be inactive because of that ever — ते संगोऽस्त्वकर्मणि

When this particular Sanskrit mantra is read in its meter, and in its entirety, the articulated wisdom gets even better than the sum of various parts — KarmanyeVadhikaraste // Ma Phaleshu Kadachana // Ma KarmafhalHetur BhurMa // TeSangoStva Akarmani

I love this mental model articulated by Shri Krishna.

I love a different set of truisms articulated by Elon Musk even better.

Some of them are — “Work like hell … Being an entrepreneur is like eating glass and staring into the abyss … Assume a high probability of failure and then work to reduce that probability, not the other way around … Really pay attention to negative feedback and solicit it … Teams work better when they know what the goal is and why".

These Elon observations are more specific and relevant to my work's context than Shri Krishna's thought in the Gita, which is aweosme too, but is more generic.

Talking of generic wisdom, an observation that I love the best, one that makes my life better everyday, is what Modi ji once said in a speech — “आलस काम नहीं करने से होता है // it is from not working that laziness is born.” (not the other way around).

For the 20 year old me, all this self reflection spiel would have been nauseatingly boring. Hashtag, LOL. Hashtag, YOLO.

But I am not 20. I feel a new kind of young right now.

The kind where committing myself to a decade long resolution—to build self-discipline and reachout to others for help—is giving me a real sense of thrill.

Also, I have arrived at this particular ten year resolution after a rather difficult struggle with ADHD and dyslexia.

(And some other challenges that an earlier me got me into.)

On most days, I see ADHD and dyslexia as my strengths, because they help me make connections across unexpected domains and form better thoughts. But then sometimes I see them as crippling shortcomings, that prevent me from getting anything done.

List Of Efforts

This page has a list of efforts—movies, books, inventions, entrepreneurial stuff—that I felt an urge to work on, and did start working on, but never finished.

But I will.

The solution to attempting too many things without finishing them is rather simple. I have learned it from various gurus, prophets, mentors, and from my own failed efforts.

The thing by which every other thing gets done is self-discipline.

If we team up with people who find an experiment interesting, a risk worthwhile, a venture profitable, a purpose fulfilling, a mission adventurous, a journey meaningful, and so on, then any effort can reach fruition.

But first we must build self-discipline, learn to focus, and start doing our individual part.

So to do that, I have put together this list of all the efforts that I worked on, but never finished, but I intend to.

This list is already randomized by javascript, and you can randomize it again (any number of times) by clicking here.
